‘Sick to my stomach’ – Charlton Athletic boss reacts after crazy late drama against Portsmouth at Fratton Park

NATHAN Jones said he felt “sick” after Charlton Athletic conceded a 98th-minute goal just two minutes after they had equalised against Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Monday night.

Home goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid pulled off a brilliant save to deny Reece Burke early in the second half.

Pompey took the lead in the 69th minute through Conor Shaughnessy before the Addicks’ Harvey Knibbs levelled.

With the clock ticking towards 98 minutes, Portsmouth kicked off before working the ball to the edge of the box and substitute Yang Min-hyeok sent the home fans wild when he beat Thomas Kaminski with a low shot into the bottom-left corner.

John Mousinho’s side climbed to 21st, just two points off Charlton.

“I have a sick feeling in my stomach because I felt it would be a travesty if we had drawn that, but to lose it, and in the manner that we did, I’m…I feel sick to my stomach, I really do,” Jones said.

“I thought for large spells of the game we were excellent. We caused real problems, first half we caused problems, silenced the crowd and looked a real threat. With a little bit of final-third quality we would have gone in ahead.

“Second half we’ve come out and we’ve had some wonderful opportunities. The keeper has pulled off an unbelievable save from Conor [Coventry]. Burkey the first one, two fantastic saves.

“We’ve had umpteen chances to take the lead, then we conceded a really, really poor goal from a corner.

“Then we’re pushing, we’re pinning them in and we finally get something we feel is the minimum we deserve. Then to switch off like we did late on is crazy, absolutely crazy.

“I’m gutted because they should never have scored from there and we have to defend that better, get on second balls. It’s just a sickening defeat.”

Charlton have lost seven of their last nine games.

Jones said: “The run we’re on, we could have said a while ago it was very different because we’ve had considerable injuries and played some top sides.

“But now we’re getting people back, the level of performance was there tonight. We just can’t be as non-clinical as we were and expect to win Championship matches.”
