NATHAN Jones said his side were “a mile off it” after they had earned the lead in added-time before drawing 2-2 against Barnsley at Oakwell on Tuesday.
The Tykes went in front through Davis Keillor-Dunn in the 34th minute before Luke Berry’s brace on 77 and 93 minutes.
But Darrell Clarke’s side came back and levelled when Max Watters fired past Will Mannion.
“The level of performance was a mile off what we prepared for,” Jones said. “If we’d done the basics better tonight we’d have won the game but we didn’t. Even the chance they had, if we win our headers tonight we win the game. Both of their goals came from us not winning headers – they hit the bar from us not winning headers.
“Even at the 94th minute, I wasn’t sure we were seeing it out because some of the stuff I saw wasn’t the stuff we work on. It was just a bit crazy. It’s a point on the road, it’s a difficult place to come, another game unbeaten but I’m disappointed with the performance, if I’m honest.”
Berry was introduced in the 62nd minute along with Thierry Smalll.
Jones added: “We made the changes because we weren’t doing the basics. I had defenders who didn’t head it, I had defenders who didn’t defend the box, I had midfielders that got over-run – we had four-v-three in there and got over-run. That is not what I want from my football team. Anyone who sees my football team would say, ‘they are at it’. We were a mile off where we need to be tonight.
“On the weekend we were excellent, absolutely at it but despite being dominant we didn’t win. Tonight we weren’t and got a point.
“We can take positives from it that they showed character to come from 1-0 down and have a midfield player that can score goals, is top for this level, and it is a point on the road.”
The Addicks are eleventh in League one but only two points off the play-off places. They host Wrexham on Saturday at 3pm.
