What Allan Campbell said previously about Nathan Jones as pair set for Charlton Athletic reunion

CHARLTON Athletic are set to make Luton Town’s Allan Campbell their eighth signing of the summer as the midfielder links up again with Nathan Jones.

Campbell, 26, has passed a medical and will join on loan, according to Football Insider

Jones signed Scotland international Campbell from Motherwell in 2021 when he was manager of Luton Town.

Campbell won a Scotland cap the following year.

Ahead of the Championship play-off final between Luton and Coventry City last year – which the Hatters won on penalties to go up under Jones’ successor Rob Edwards – Campbell spoke about the Charlton boss.

He told The Athletic: “Nathan was brilliant and he used his energy and passion and tried to put that into his players and I think we fed off that.”

Campbell described what he tries to bring to a team. He said: “Winning every tackle, going for every header and trying to get as many goals I can, just giving my all. If there was one thing I would say about myself is when I go on to the park, I always give my all. I’m sure the fans relate to that and I’m glad to get the support.”

Campbell joined Charlton’s South London rivals Millwall on loan from Luton last summer. But the move didn’t work out as he made just twelve Championship appearances including nine starts.

Jones spoke about Campbell in 2022 after he won his cap.

“I spoke to his dad and we reminisced about the meeting we had, a couple of meetings with him and his dad and we said, ‘if he comes to Luton, he will become a Scottish international’,” Jones said.

“Bearing in mind he’s a very, very proud, staunch Scot that has real ambition of doing that, then we had to keep our end of the bargain.

“He had a fantastic season, got better, got stronger.

“He had to contend with what could’ve been a bad injury early on, but he recovered so quickly from that and was then just magnificent for us.

“I spoke to his dad and the club are really proud of him.

“It’s well-deserved because there aren’t many better Scottish midfield players playing in the Championship than Allan Campbell.

“Yes, he has a lot of [potential for] development, and he will get better, but he’s made massive leaps last year.”
