MAURICIO Pochettino is coming under increasing pressure at Chelsea – with the wife of Thiago Silva calling for a change and then later issuing an apology for her “outburst”.
The Blues were humiliated 4-2 by Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge last weekend as they dropped into the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Pochettino has a win record of just 45 per cent, compared to over 54 per cent at Tottenham Hotspur and over 65 per cent at Paris Saint-Germain.
After 31 games in charge, Pochettino’s record is not too dissimilar to the much-derided Graham Potter’s, who was sacked last April. Pochettino has won two more games after the same number in charge.
After the defeat to Wolves, Isabelle Silva wrote on social media: “It’s time to change. If you wait any longer it will be too late.”
On Wednesday, Mrs Silva went on Twitter to apologise. She wrote: “I’m sorry that my personal outburst as a passionate Chelsea fan has caused such an impact. I’m passionate about the team, I thrive on victories and I’m saddened by defeats.
“We all want the same thing, a winning team, come on Chelsea!!”
The Athletic reported this week they had been told by sources close to the dressing room that tactical details were lacking and the playing style was “off the cuff”.
Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is available after being sacked by Italian side AS Roma, with some supporters calling for him to replace Pochettino.
Chelsea have spent more than £1billion on transfers under owner Todd Boehly, and there would be sizeable compensation were the club to get rid of Pochettino and his support staff.
Pochettino knows something has to change, though was vague on what that might be.
“At the moment we are not reflecting the history of the club, that is true and we need to accept it,” Pochettino said after the defeat to Wolves. “We need to be critics, but not give up. We are going to work really hard to try to change, maybe take decisions trying to find things in a different way if it’s not working in this way, to try to find different solutions.”
