THERE were a total of 168 players who had been on professional contracts until 2023-24 released by Premier League clubs when the retained lists were announced at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Three of those clubs – Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United – will be playing in the Championship next season after their relegations.
There are some big names on the list, including Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane – the latter who was on the winning side in the FA Cup last season – who are leaving Manchester United.
Some of those on the released list already have moves lined up. Chelsea’s Thiago Silva is returning to Brazil after signing for the first club of his youth career, Fluminese.
The other player joining Silva in leaving the Blues is Josh Brooking.
Other sides are still in discussions with players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of June.
United have offered new deals to Jonny Evans, 36, and Tom Heaton, 38.
Fulham are talking with former Chelsea and Arsenal winger Willian, and with Bobby De Cordova-Reid.
Thiago Alcantara, 33, and Joel Matip, 32, are the big names leaving Liverpool.
One name on the list that may have some people scratching their heads is Tom Huddlestone. The former England international midfielder has almost 600 career appearances for Derby County, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Hull City.
But at the age of 37, Huddlestone was still on the books at United, where he had been a player-coach since 2022.
Meanwhile, Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga are the big names leaving Spurs.
