Major blow for England as last-sixteen hero Marc Guehi to miss Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland

ENGLAND will be without Marc Guehi for their Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland next Saturday.

Crystal Palace centre-back Guehi was booked just three minutes into the 2-1 win over Slovakia on Sunday evening. Guehi reacted to a poor pass from Kieran Trippier in just the third minute by fouling David Strelec. Guehi was also booked in the 0-0 draw against Slovenia and will serve a one-match ban.

Not only did Guehi manage to avoid another booking in the next 120 minutes, he set up the equaliser for Jude Bellingham in the fifth minute of added-time with Gareth Southgate’s side seconds away from elimination.

That was England’s first shot on target of the game, but they had to wait just one minute of extra-time before taking the lead as Harry Kane headed home.

Slovakia had taken the lead on 25 minutes when Ivan Schranz poked a low finish past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The Three Lions put in another dismal performance as they tried to get back into the game. Their chance came when Guehi flicked on Kyle Walker’s throw-in and Bellingham – who turned 21 on Saturday – produced a brilliant overhead kick to beat Martin Dubravka.

Guehi’s absence will be a huge blow for Southgate. The 23-year-old Eagles defender has played every minute of the tournament alongside John Stones in the centre of defence.

Southgate’s other options are Ezra Konsa, Lewis Dunk and Joe Gomez.
