OLIVER Glasner said “almost nothing worked” for Crystal Palace and they will throw the result “into the bin” after they were demolished 5-0 by Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Jacob Murphy opened the scoring in the fourteenth minute as the Magpies raced into a 4-0 half-time lead.
Palace should have levelled only for Eberechi Eze to have his penalty saved by Nick Pope, who atoned for his foul on Chris Richards.
The hosts doubled their advantage when Marc Guehi scored his second own goal this season against Newcastle when he turned Harvey Barnes’ cross past Dean Henderson.
Barnes made it 3-0 three minutes into first-half added-time and there was yet more misery for the Eagles when Fabian Schar scored the fourth five minutes later.
Alexander Isak scored his 25th goal of the season when Joelinton stole the ball from Maxence Lacroix and the Sweden striker fired into the bottom corner from 25 yards.
“Newcastle are in excellent shape and they showed this in the last weeks. We couldn’t deal with their intensity, with their directness, with their pace,” Glasner said.
“When we had the situation maybe to get back into the game, it didn’t work today. There are some days where, to be honest, almost nothing works. This was one of those days for us.
“On the other side, many things that worked for Newcastle…then it’s this result, it’s the game, how it happened. I said to the players, ‘sometimes you have such games and it’s not always being so analytical, sometimes it’s better to throw it into the bin’ – and this is what we will do with this game.
Glasner added: “Sometimes you don’t have the right answer, because we changed nothing [from previous away matches] and things don’t work anymore. We didn’t do it on the level we have done it previously.
“We also know, and I think we have to be very honest: we are Crystal Palace, and if we don’t perform on our top level individually and as a team, then maybe a Newcastle side and Manchester City side are better than we are, especially when they are in form and playing at home. This is what we experienced the last two games.
“It’s what we spoke about at half-time, we wanted to at least draw the second half, but we didn’t achieve it.
“We said, ‘okay, first half nothing really worked, but in the second half this influences the next games’. I think it was a bit better.
“Newcastle maybe didn’t have as high of an intensity until the end of the game, but again, it doesn’t help. We didn’t get any points from this game today. We can talk about it, we can analyse it. I think it’s good for us maybe to take one step back and focus on the basics, focus on what made us strong.
“Then, we will give everything, always together. It’s not a moment to point the finger at anyone. It’s now time to look into the mirror and say, ‘okay, what can I maybe change a little bit’ – and then we will get the turnaround.
“I also want to mention this and say that I really appreciate the fact that we had many fans here tonight.
“It’s a midweek game, far in the north. Being 5-0 down, fans could have been very disappointed. Because we all are very disappointed. But they were supporting the team until the end. This is also what we want to do with our team, to stay together and get in the turnaround with the opportunity in three days against Bournemouth.”
