‘Madness’ – Dulwich Hamlet goal-scorer blown away by 3,000-plus support for seventh-tier game

Rampant Dulwich Hamlet did all the damage in the first half as they extended their unbeaten Isthmian League Premier Division run to six games with a 3-1 dismissal of Folkestone Invicta at Champion Hill last weekend.

The majority of the 3,069 crowd were treated to goals from Michael Chambers, Danny Mills and Ryley Scott in the opening 42 minutes.

Kane Penn had made it 2-1 on 28 minutes. Scott Heard missed the chance to equalise when his effort hit the bar.

It was Dulwich who created the better chances to add a fourth and the day ended on a sour note for the visitors as their captain Callum Davies was shown a straight red card two minutes from time.

Dulwich manager Hakan Hayrettin has stressed a number of times this season the importance of trying to take a point from away games and then backing it up with three at home.

“I thought we controlled it from start to finish,” Hayrettin told Hamlet TV. “I think we were the better team. We go 2-0 up and that’s where we have to manage the game a little better but we didn’t. We give them a bit of an opener, and then we get back and make it 3-1.

“But, it’s slowly but surely getting there. That’s six league games unbeaten and we need to keep pushing.

“The second half we controlled the game and were never in any trouble or any doubt. Their goalkeeper made two excellent saves so we could have had a couple more.

“Over all we’re pleased and the support again was unbelievable. To be managing this team and have 3,000-plus supporters behind you every week at home is just unbelievable, unbelievable.”

It was Dulwich’s first win at home in three games in all competitions.

“I’m buzzing,” goal-scorer Scott said. “It’s one of those where we have been working towards it, haven’t we, and for whatever reason it hasn’t happened consistently. But we’re six games unbeaten now, and that was a good win.

“Obviously we’re disappointed with the goal [conceded] but it’s three points at the end of the day.

“We’re sitting eleventh now and there’s nothing in it. What is it, three, four points off the play-offs? We’ll just take every game as it comes and get points on the table.”

On the huge support, Scott added: “It’s madness. The league above, the league above that, where do you see that many fans? It’s crazy. It’s such a help. They’re not on the pitch, they’re not hearing the noise, but when a goal goes in, it gets you going.”

The Hamlet travel to Cray Wanderers in the league this Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.
