ROMAIN Esse is “probably as talented as anyone we’ve got”, according to Millwall boss Gary Rowett.
The 18-year-old showed his quality during the first half of a pre-season win over Gillingham, despite having to adapt to a new role.
Esse was deployed in central midfield in a 3-4-1-2 formation having previously played in a wider role for the Lions.
But the tactical switch did not hinder the youngster who reminded fans of his magnetic quality on the ball.
Rowett was impressed with Esse’s composure and even wished some senior players followed the example he set at Priestfield.
The Millwall boss said: “For me at the moment with Rom it’s just a combination of the numbers we’ve got and having a look at one or two things and trying to get him in an area where he can affect the game.
“And pre-season he’s played in that role. I don’t necessarily think it’s one he’s going to play in the Championship straight away. I think long-term it’s certainly an area he could be more central, maybe if you play two eights in a 4-3-3 formation.
“But he’s got so much quality, he’s got so much ability and I think for me you see him first half trying to make things happen, trying to always get on the ball. And you look second half and we’ve got a few senior players and I’m looking going ‘come on then, show the same bravery’.
“So I’ve been pleased with him. There’s been an opportunity to play him a bit further forward at some point.
“But at the moment his quality is not going to stop him getting in the first team, it’s going to be all the other things around it. He’s already probably as talented as anyone we’ve got. He’s developing really nicely.”
A penalty from Kevin Nisbet – his first goal for the club – after Duncan Watmore was fouled in the box by Conor Masterson got the ball rolling for Millwall in the first half.
A less dominant second 45 followed but the win was secured late on after a brilliant strike by Aidomo Emakhu.
