MILLWALL fans will tell you a trip to The Den is one of the best away days in the Championship – and now research has confirmed it.

To complete their new study to rank trips with an ‘away day score’ out of ten, the team at OLBG ranked factors such as stadium Google review scores, average beer and pie prices, the cost of parking, distances to the nearest train station, and the number of football-related arrests recorded at each ground to determine the stadiums providing the best experience for away fans of all ages.

The best away days in the Championship:

A trip to Fratton Park has been named the best away day in the Championship, scoring 7.14/10. Fans visiting the home of Portsmouth will be greeted by respectable food and drink prices, with the average cost of a pint of beer and a pie costing £7. For travelling fans looking to drive to the game, the cost to park in the nearest car park is just £5, which is considerably lower than other teams in the league.

The Hawthorns has been named the second-best away day in the Championship, scoring 7.08/10. The stadium, home to West Bromich Albion has been awarded a Google Review score of 4.7 and has a train station 0.6 miles away for fans happy to walk the short distance. These factors alone paired with low beer and food prices make The Hawthorns the perfect day for an away day outing.

The Den and Riverside Stadium complete the top three, scoring 6.40/10 respectively. Despite The Den having an intense atmosphere, fans travelling to the stadium can enjoy free parking and the nearest train station is just a 0.2 mile walk away from the stadium. For fans travelling to the Riverside Stadium in the north east, the average cost of a pie is £3 and the nearest car park is just 0.1km away.

The research also revealed:

  • The average cost of a pint at Turf Moor, home of Burnley FC, is just £3.20, which is the cheapest in the Championship, while Elland Road has the highest at £5.
  • The average cost of a pie at Ewood Park is £2.80, which is lower than at any other stadium, while Vicarage Road has the highest at £4.20.
  • Only 4 arrests were made at Fratton Park last season, which is the lowest in the Championship, while The Den recorded the highest number at 36.
