Millwall boss on what formation he could deploy next season after adding Scottish striker to his squad

GARY Rowett has explained his thinking around what his formation could be in attack next season.

Millwall made forward Kevin Nisbet their first signing of the summer when he joined from Scottish Premiership Hibernian.

Scotland international Nisbet joins Tom Bradshaw in the squad. Bradshaw scored 17 league goals last season and will be confident of being a regular in the side.

Zian Flemming scored 15 goals in 2022-23 playing mostly just off Bradshaw.

Rowett wants more players with goal-scoring potential in his team.

“It’s an area of the pitch that we are always looking to add good quality options to,” Rowett said. “Kevin of course we know all about because we almost signed him in January. He’s one that we think can give us a little bit something different in terms of his qualities.

“He’s a goal-scorer, he proved that after coming back from injury. He’s mobile, he’s got a good understanding of the game and he works really hard.

“His record having come back from a relatively long-term injury has been outstanding. It usually takes a little bit of a while to find your rhythm and that timing again, but he came back in and scored goals straightaway.

“We’re hoping he can replicate that with us. I think he’s a good fit character-wise, quality-wise. And as I’ve said he’s a really hard-working player.

“I think he’s a good fit for us and really pleased to have got him over the line.”

Rowett was asked where he sees Nisbet fitting into the side.

Rowett said: “Whatever player we sign we’re always looking for ways to change things a little bit to get more players of quality into the team.

“We can certainly play with two up top and one in behind. We can play with three narrow forwards.

“You’re always looking for more goals in the team. He’s certainly come in with a very good chance of starting games. But I think Tom, after scoring 17 goals last season, you want to try to add to that, to build on that.”

Millwall go to their pre-season training camp in Spain in early July and Rowett commented on whether he expected to have more new signings on board before then.

Millwall have been linked with Blackburn Rovers midfielder Lewis Travis and left-back Joe Bryan, who is a free agent.

“We’re always hopeful,” Rowett said. “But it’s not easy, we say it every year, every manager would like all their players in before pre-season. But it’s just not realistic, unfortunately.

“We’re working very hard, myself, Alex [Aldridge], Steve [Kavanagh], to try and get some deals done.”
