Queens Park Rangers boss picks out pleasing aspect of performance at Plymouth Argyle despite late dropped points

MARTI Cifuentes was pleased with Queens Park Rangers’ reaction to their defeat against Sheffield Wednesday despite dropping two points against fellow relegation strugglers Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Tuesday.

After their 2-0 defeat to the 23rd-placed Owls at Loftus Road on Saturday, the R’s looked set for victory against Plymouth when Sam Field gave them a 73rd-minute lead.

But Albert Adomah’s own goal five minutes from time rescued a point for the hosts.

Cifuentes felt his side had enough chances to be more comfortably ahead before Argyle’s response.

“It was obviously disappointing because we created enough chances to not only win the game, but to close the game [out with more goals],” Cifuentes said.

“But that’s the reality of football, it’s not a new rule, I mentioned some weeks ago that it is unfortunately something that we’ve experienced this season, we don’t have the accuracy to close games.

“For us it was very important to react and to react in a strong way after a weak performance, and I think the guys delivered,” Cifuentes said.

“That makes me feel confident about seeing the effort they put in and the quality we played, especially in the second half, and after we scored the first goal we kept pressing high, kept pushing, trying to create chances.

“That’s the way I want to see QPR playing and that’s why I feel very sad about the result because we are in a moment of the season where results are always what matters.”

QPR are four points above the relegation zone in  sixteenth, and two points above Plymouth who are 20th.

Plymouth’s director of football Neil Dewsnip is also the interim head coach after the sacking of Ian Foster.

“We genuinely thought we could win the game, at half-time we still thought the same,” Dewsnip said.

“When they scored, that was the moment that the team had to show incredible resilience.

I thought the crowd were magnificent to help us, and we got the goal which could be invaluable.

“We see it as a point gained, not an opportunity missed at home.

“That’s now four points from two games which means momentum for us is changing and we go again Friday.”

QPR travel to Hull City on Saturday.

Plymouth host current leaders Leicester City on Friday night.
