Hoops boss pulls no punches after Sky Blues capitulation

GARETH Ainsworth revealed there had been a frank exchange of views in the dressing room immediately after Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Coventry.

QPR were only denied a first half lead by a spectacular stop from visiting keeper Ben Nixon to thwart Lyndon Dykes’ header.

But the Loftus Road curse continued after the break when Ellis Simms put Coventry ahead in the 56th minute before Josh Eccles doubled the advantage on the hour.

Ainsworth was furious at the decision not to award his side a penalty after a challenge by Wilson on Sinclair Armstrong.

Simms then added his second of the afternoon midway through the second half and even though Kenneth Paal pulled one back late on, this was another day to forget for QPR in front of their own fans.

Ainsworth told the club’s YouTube channel: “Everyone at Loftus would have said at half-time we were the better side.

“We had more territory, more aggression, we had a great save from their keeper to deny Lyndon but we didn’t really get much else.

“When we’ve got that much possession and when we are doing so well we’ve got to make it count.

“I said to the boys at half-time you’ve got to make it count, you’ve got to get out there and do the same again because this game has a strange habit of kicking you up the backside and it really did.

“Their first goal is offside but everyone is going to screaming saying don’t blame the officials.

“We should have had a penalty – 100 percent we should have had a penalty. I cannot believe for one minute why he hasn’t done that.

“That is for me to go and see the referee about. I cannot believe that is not a penalty on Sinclair Armstrong.

“But the collapse after that first goal I thought was a mental thing. The boys just looked wide open.”

It was the nature of the early second half capitulation which alarmed Ainsworth the most, particularly since the obvious ongoing defensive improvement after the opening day 4-0 drubbing at Watford.

The Hoops boss added: “We’ve worked so hard on being secure, being solid – everyone has been saying how QPR look really solid now.

“Not today, not for that 20 minute spell and that has cost us.

“We were wide open at times and whether we were trying to get back in the game or we were having a bit of a panic or whether it is a mental thing that I’ve got to break here, it wasn’t good enough for that 20 minutes.

“We were always going to have chances, we were always going to come back in it and Ken scored a great goal at the end there.

“We probably had one or two more chances which meant we could have had a 1-1 or 2-2 at least today but a 3-1 is a bad result, especially at home.

“I’m disappointed with the boys. I’m not happy at all.

“We’ve been in that dressing room having it out there and things have got to change, especially at Loftus Road because that isn’t good enough.”
