QPR boss looking to replicate Millwall run and pull clear of danger

MARTI Cifuentes wants QPR to take inspiration from their next opponents Millwall ahead of Saturday’s derby clash between the pair,

The Hoops were beaten 2-1 at home by Watford earlier today, a result which leaves them winless in six Championship games and five points from safety.

Just over a month ago they had struggling Millwall in their sights before Joe Edwards steadied the ship at The Den to lift the Lions clear of danger.

That impressive turn around in fortunes included a 2-0 Boxing Day success over Cifuentes’ Rangers side, who now have a chance for some quick revenge at Loftus Road.

QPR’s manager believes Millwall have shown just how things can quickly change, something he wants his side to replicate.

He told the club’s YouTube channel: “We are preparing for every game now like it is a cup final. We know how important January is, so for us we need to get as many points as we can.

“We have now a really important game against a team that was not that far away and quite close to us in the table.

“They got a good trend and that shows in the Championship that when you get a couple of good results then you can go up in the table quickly.

“So that’s what we need to do – we need to make sure that we get back to the form that we were in before December to make sure that we get a couple of results that can liven up everybody.

“Because the atmosphere today, the supporters have been amazing supporting them until the last minute.

“Now what we need to do is give them back this support because the togetherness within the club is as important as ever.

“We need everybody now – the best of everybody – and I’m sure we are going to get the victories that we need.”

QPR failed to take their chances against the Hornets and paid the price on the hour when Jake Livermore struck from outside the box.

Livermore added his and Watford’s second just five minutes later and although Lyndon Dykes halved the deficit in the 77th minute, a leveller eluded the hosts despite a stunning Ben Hamer from Jimmy Dunne late on.

Cifuentes said: “It was a very disappointing result, especially because we performed at a decent level I would say creating many chances and not conceding many.

“The first shot on target from Watford was the first goal and before that we got three or four clear situations to make sure we were leading the game.

“In some ways there are encouraging things that we can take from the game because we were playing against a very good side, a top ten team for sure and with quality to be even higher in the table.”

He added: “Today on the pitch we showed that we can compete against very good teams.

“But obviously we are here to win football games and when we get this amount of chances we need to make sure that we score because the result will definitely be very different.”
