KENNY Tete’s decisive spot-kick saw Fulham beat Spurs 5-3 on penalties in the Carabao Cup after the two sides drew 1-1 in normal time at Craven Cottage.
The Cottagers went ahead on 19 minutes when Tom Cairney pulled the ball across the six-yard box and it went in off the unfortunate Micky van de Ven.
Fraser Forster made a one-handed save to keep out a Rodrigo Muniz header just before the break and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg should have fired Spurs level early in the second half, instead placing his attempt off target.
It was to only be a brief reprieve for the Cottagers, however, as they were pegged back by the visitors in the 56th minute.
Fulham were down to 10-men at the time because Tete was off the field after losing a shoe.
And Ivan Peresic took full advantage by delivering a perfect cross from the right, which was headed home by Richarlison at the back post.
Bobby De Cordova-Reid could have restored the home side’s advantage after being picked out by Harry Wilson’s pass but he sliced his effort off target,
Wilson was unfortunate to see a shot blocked by Davinson Sanchez and the Fulham substitute was denied again in the 90th minute, this time by Forster.
Raul Jimenez might have won it in stoppage time with a header that went over the bar, a miss which ensured the outcome would be decided by a penalty shootout.
Fulham led 3-2 through Andreas Pereira, Jimenez and Wilson before Sanchez was thwarted by home keeper Marek Rodak.
Joao Palhinha made no mistake with his effort from 12 yards and although James Maddison’s successful conversion kept the pressure on, Tete held his nerve with a cool finish to send Fulham into the third round draw.
A delighted Marco Silva beamed afterwards that outcome was the correct one.
The Cottagers boss said: “We were the better side. We deserved to win.
“From the first minute, the players were on the front foot. They executed the game plan well and understood the right moments to press.
“We didn’t settle and that was one of the key reasons we grew in confidence in the 97 minutes.
“We had the better chances to score and played better.”
