Wimbledon manager looking for positive response at Morecambe

AFC Wimbledon are looking to bounce back on the road at Morecambe after their midweek 4-2 home defeat to Accrington.

There is a big contrast between how Johnnie Jackson’s side perform at Plough Lane and away from home, with 16 of the Dons’ 22 points so far this season having been collected on their travels.

Wimbledon make a quick return to the same part of the country at Morecambe tomorrow following last weekend’s respectable 0-0 stalemate at Barrow.

And manager Jackson is looking for more away glory, even though he fully expects a testing clash against a team just two points and places above them in League Two.

He told afcwimbledon.co.uk: “Yes, Morecambe are a tough side and it’s a tough place to go – back in the north west.

“We’ve had a few long journeys already and more to come.

“They’re on a decent run of form, but our away form has been really strong.

“We’ve got lads who are desperate to play, to put things right, and are also in a positive frame of mind when it comes to attacking these away games.

“We’ll go up there full confidence that we can go and get a result, knowing – as always – we’re up against opposition that can cause us problems.

“However, we can do that ourselves, as we’ve shown time and time again.”

Jackson described the first-half display against Accrington as a one-off immediately after the match and has since had the chance to work through what happened with his squad on the training pitch.

The boss has been pleased with how his charges have responded to the feedback provided from the coaching team and now the challenge is to put it right at Morecambe.

He explained: “We had to put it to bed really quickly with another game coming up.

“We looked at the previous night and it was spoken about in honest terms – what we needed to do better.

“The players engaged in that and they recognised that we didn’t do the things in those first 45 minutes that had brought us success for large parts of the season.

“We came away from our levels, we came away from what we had been doing well – for whatever reason – and we threw in a bad first-half.”

Jackson added: “We responded brilliantly in the second half and on another night we might have got something.

“The response in the second-half gave us the belief that the first-half was an anomaly. I told the lads that the good thing is having another game soon.

“I told them, ‘Before you know it, we’re going to be on the train going to Morecambe and you’ve got the opportunity to put it right as soon as possible’.

“That’s the beauty of football, sometimes you have no time to dwell.

“We’ve addressed it and they’re desperate to get back out there.”
