GEORGE Ford was England’s starting out-half in their thrilling Six Nations win over Ireland on Saturday – but another George was auditioning for the role in Millwall’s relegation battle against Birmingham City at The Den.
England’s replacement No.10 Marcus Smith raised the Twickenham roof with a last-gasp drop-goal for a 23-22 win for Steve Borthwick’s side.
And in south London, the rafters shook as Millwall’s George Saville booted a free-kick straight into touch with the Lions protecting their 1-0 lead – and then celebrated with team-mate Ryan Leonard.
Millwall saw the game out to make it three wins and a draw in Neil Harris’ four games back in charge.
Harris makes no excuses for the style of play he favours, a direct up-and-at-‘em approach, defined by aggression and no-nonsense football. Harris knows it is what Lions supporters want, so when Saville put his laces through the ball The Den knew exactly what they were seeing and erupted.
Saville had provided the winning goal with a free-kick that was headed in by on-loan Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga.
England have a slim chance of winning the Six Nations title next week in France, but Harris has ensured the Lions’ chances of staying up have gone from slim to strong after their latest win.
