Master and apprentice: Charlton Athletic makes admission after Swansea City salvage point at The Valley

NATHAN Jones admitted Charlton Athletic need to learn how to control games better after Swansea City came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at The Valley.

Charlie Kelman scored his first Charlton goal to give the hosts the lead a minute into the second half but the Swans levelled through Adam Idah in the 64th minute.

The Addicks lost defenders Amari’i Bell and Reece Burke through injury in the first half.

Alan Sheehan’s side could have won it in added-time only for Josh Key to shoot over.

”We didn’t play well,” Jones said. “Did we not play well because we were bad or Swansea were good?

“Swansea are a good side, they have good players, they are well coached.

“At times we have to dust ourselves down. If you don’t play well then don’t lose. If you can’t win a game then don’t lose it, and that’s what we have done today.

“I’m delighted for Charlie. He has been working tirelessly and getting little opportunities. It was nice to see him take one because that will be good for him.”

On Charlton TV, Jones said: “The first half was even, but I thought we had the better chances and their keeper made a couple of good saves.

“The injuries to two centre-halves, two defenders caused a real disruption. We had to reshuffle the pack there with that, and we had to change shape which we don’t normally do.”

“We started the second half, we get a goal and we hope that we can go on from there, but then Swansea came back into the game and controlled the game better than we did and that is something for us to learn.

“In the end we had to make sure that we stayed in the game and that we didn’t lose and that’s what we did today.”

Jones signed Sheehan for Luton Town in 2016 and made him club captain. They won two promotions together.

Jones had Sheehan on his coaching staff with the Hatters and at Southhampton.

“We are very disappointed we did not take all three points,” Sheehan said.

“When you come here you know you have to negate and be able to deal with their direct play and set-pieces, and those transition situations.

“They are a team that is very difficult to play against, you have to break them down and keep working.

“We made a poor start to the second half having looked very comfortable in the first half.

“But then we just took over. It was just wave after wave after wave of us attacking. We had numerous opportunities and got into the final third.

“Adam led the line well for us, he had a very good chance in the first half, got into good areas. He was a constant menace and got his goal.

“We had other opportunities. It was just a case lacking a bit of composure in our decision-making, so we are disappointed with a point today because we were the better team and outstanding in that second half.”
