The Divine Evangeline

Three Chairs and a Hat’s new hour-long musical ‘Evangeline’, by Nia Williams, comes to The Glitch in Waterloo after successful runs at Oxford’s Burton-Taylor Theatre and at The Lantern Theatre for the Brighton Fringe.

The show has a cast of one — Guy Brigg — and tells the rollercoaster story of a showbiz survivor, who starts life being abandoned in a cardboard box, eventually finds brief fame on the stage and then seems to sabotage her own career.

Despite these grim circumstances, there’s plenty of humour and fun, and Guy plays every character in Evangeline’s story, as well as portraying the divine Ms E herself from childhood to ‘late youth’.

Three Chairs and a Hat is an Oxford-based theatre company founded by Williams, primarily to stage her musicals, and has taken productions to Edinburgh and Camden fringe festivals and several theatre venues. It branched out into animated musicals during the Lockdown restrictions, and has won several awards, including the Scenesaver Birthday Honours Best Musical award for ‘Verity’.

Guy Brigg has performed in, choreographed and directed many shows, and is resident creative director of the award-winning Musical Youth Company Oxford. He was awarded an MBE in 2017 for services to education and community, citing his work in theatre, education, theatre arts and equality.
