Stella Cardew has exhibited internationally but these days the prolific artist shows her new artworks more locally, hence another exhibition in East Dulwich, writes Michael Holland
There is a theme of flowers, big and bold in bulbous vases, the blooms pushed to the forefront by backdrops that hint at pleasant dreams while verging on the ephemeral and abstract.
But in amongst the flora there are other artworks, a nude lounging, a bird harassed by an angel, and a single yellow leaf proclaiming its role in life’s natural cycle.
A painting of red roses hooked my attention because it was called Whitechapel and I could not work out why, so when I managed to get a minute with the artist that was my first question. She explained that a lady from the Whitechapel Gallery said how much she liked it, which was the catalyst for Ms Cardew to add a little something to the background that linked it to the gallery. It is those little secret extras – and most artists add them to their work – that makes some art very intriguing.
One of the paintings of the eighteen in the show was not for sale, and all Stella would say was that it was for someone special. More intrigue.
Of the remaining paintings six were sold at the well-attended opening event, which shows that the dream-like quality of Stella Cardew’s work is extremely attractive.
Jeannie Avent Gallery, 14 North Cross Road, East Dulwich, London, SE22 9EU until 6th June. Open daily 11am – 5pm. Admission: Free.
