Things to do this weekend in Southwark

This weekend is all about community in Southwark, with more exciting things going on, including a massive street party and an all-day sound system in Burgess Park.

The Great Get Together, Bankside

Once again, Living Bankside will host this year’s Great Get Together Bankside, a national street party to unite communities.

Now in its seventh year, the event is part of a nationwide series of weekend activities inspired by the memory of the late Jo Cox MP – who was shot and stabbed by a man who “did not share her political views.”

The events are an attempt to bring the community together and prove what Jo famously said to be true, that ‘we have more in common than that which divides us.’

Watch human towers being built before your eyes by Castellers of London, take part in a Wacky Races competition and listen to an array of performances from local choirs and sing-a-longs to drumming and samba.

Radiate Festival, Burgess Park

A two-day event this weekend will start with a free community festival and end with a huge celebration of Caribbean and Black-British culture, for the 75th anniversary of Windrush.

Radiate Festival begins in Burgess Park on Saturday, June 24 with the Village Social, a celebration of community and culture in Britain and how migration has built that.

Saturday is free entry and will feature a live stage with music and DJs, garden games, a craft market and lots of food and drink stalls.

This is all gearing up for Windrush 75, on Sunday, June 25, which will celebrate the Windrush legacy in Britain, and how Caribbean culture has shaped generations in the UK. This event is ticketed and will include performances from acts such as Donae’O and Misha B, along with an all-day sound system. There will be food, art and a flag parade too.

Summer Fair, Elephant and Castle

Take the kids to Ark Globe Academy’s annual summer fair, with fairground rides, a farm and the chance to take a penalty with a Fulham FC academy coach.

The event will run between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm and the whole community is invited. There will be lots of stalls and games including performances from Ark Globe students, a mobile farm, birds of prey, a cup and saucer ride, face painting, a Fulham FC penalty shoot-out, a barbecue, a raffle and much more.

The aim of the event is not primarily fundraising for the school or profit-making, but they aim for the event to fundraise for itself – so it can carry on every year.
