The Sun, The Mountain and Me

Jack Fairey’s The Sun, The Mountain, and Me is a new solo show starring Max Puplett that melds ancient myth and historical anecdote with emotive storytelling to explore art, freedom, and the mistakes we make when searching for escape.

‘We push higher and higher, up higher than we have ever climbed… and then we are out.’

In Ancient Greece, Icarus has never left the tower that imprisons him and his father. But every day he wakes, and stares at the sun, desperate to join it in the sky.

In World War Two Kenya, prisoner of war, Felice Benuzzi, is dying of boredom. But then the rain clears, and he sees the stunning peak of Mount Kenya, and he makes a vow to climb it.

And in modern day Egham, a young man named Arthur – caught in the grip of his declining mental health – is just trying to finish a painting.

The Sun, the Mountain, and Me was written during the 2020 COVID lockdown, when we were all somewhat trapped and looking to art for ways to escape. The play began its life as an audio piece, before being adapted to the stage for a development run in summer 2022.
