Charlton Athletic fans want manager sacked after fifth defeat in six games

CHARLTON Athletic supporters demanded the sacking of manager Michael Appleton after his side lost for the fifth time in six league games as Burton Albion won 2-0 at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.

Mark Helm and John Brayford scored in each half as Brewers boss Martin Paterson got his first win in his second match in charge.

Charlton have lost five and drawn one of their last six league games and are now sixteenth, just seven points above the relegation zone.

Appleton has brought in six players in January, with five of them featuring against the Brewers. Conor Coventry, Tyreeq Bakinson and Freddie Ladapo started, while Macaulay Gillesphey and Lewis Forini camel on in the second half.

Addicks fans were unimpressed with what they saw as they chanted, “Sack him now or we’re going down”.

Visiting supporters were also unimpressed with Appleton’s touchline demeanour when the side was 1-0 down in the first half, singing, “Get your hands out your pockets”.

Charlton are now without a win in nine League One games. After they last won, 2-1 against Cheltenham Town in November, they were tenth, seven points off the play-offs.

They host Northampton Town on Tuesday night with their play-off dream over and a relegation fight ominously approaching in the rearview mirror.
