Viewpoint is a joint exhibition of paintings by Sally Burch and Wendy Brooke-Smith.
Wendy will be exhibiting a collection of paintings of London and the Thames, and Sally will be exhibiting her colourful abstract works.
Sally Burch graduated from Central St Martins, London with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Fine Art after initially studying Graphic Design at Brighton School of Art . She combines the skills from her graphic roots stirring the paint pot with ever evolving ideas from her fine art education.
She is inspired by the colour theorist, Johannes Itten and the ideas of the Bauhaus (the foundation of simplicity by creating aesthetic value through vibrant and contrasting colour). The founder of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, famously said; ‘colourful is my favourite colour’ it could also be Sally’s resounding mantra.
Sally has spent time drawing inspiration from the North Essex landscape where she lives, and turning the visual cues into a personal abstract, artistic language made of geometric structuring, mark-making and patterning. The work is a reconstructed, collaged tableaux.
”Beauty lies not in the real world but in geometry”. Plato
Wendy Brooke-Smith is a contemporary landscape painter, based in Essex. She finds inspiration in visible layers of history or the impact of manmade structures and shapes in our natural environment. Her favourite subject matter is the Thames, where she delights in finding new vantage points to explore the drama of boats, bridges and the ever-changing backdrop of the City skyline. Wendy paints in acrylic and oil, developing her ideas from charcoal drawings in her studio. She trained at UCS in Ipswich, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008. She exhibits regularly in London and East Anglia.
