We talk to candlemaker Emily Kendall talks about her local business, which was founded in a little flat in SE1

SE1 Candle Co. makes gorgeous scented candles for your home.

What is your favourite scent and why?

It’s so hard to pick just one! I’d have to say that burning Evening Light and Salty Shores together is a feast for the senses. They’re the first two scents I created and they balance each other out so well.

What do you love about candle making?

I find it really therapeutic. It’s a chance to slow down, get away from screens and get creative.

A lot of research and testing has to go into making a high-quality candle, but the end result is so worth it and it’s so satisfying when you see (and smell) the end product.

How has SE1 influenced your brand?

I would say SE1 oozes creativity. Being in central London, there’s always something new popping up and I’m constantly inspired by everything around me and by other local makers.

I wanted to create something luxurious but also quite minimalistic.

Sustainability is also at the heart of the brand and it’s great that so many Londoners are more mindful of the importance of this now.

Where is your favourite place to spend your downtime in SE1?

As a foodie, I’m a big fan of Borough Market and Bermondsey Street on the weekends. But also exploring the little streets around the river, like Shad Thames and Borough Yards is fun, too!

I find being near water especially calming so the river is where I’ll go if I need a bit of head space.

As it’s Christmas, what do you think the best stocking filler is?

Sweater Weather, Gingerbread House and Winter Wonderland are real crowd-pleasers at this time of year! (Classic me, why choose just one?)
