This summer, the Olivier Award-nominated creators of Rough Magic and Midsummer Mechanicals invite you on an epic journey into the greatest world of all: the imagination.

Cass is a boy who finds real life tricky. Luckily, he can take refuge in his imagination – a place where stories burst out effortlessly, and he can be whoever he wants.

Inspired by tales from Shakespeare, read to him by his Gran, Cass and his band of imaginary friends have fought with kings, flown with witches, faced shipwrecks, ghosts and monsters, and dived into adventures of every kind.

But something is going wrong. The stories have stopped making sense, the adventures aren’t adventurous, and a strange darkness is creeping in. Finding himself lost in a Shakespearean Shadow Land, Cass must work out if he’s in a tragedy like Hamlet, a Comedy of his own Errors, or another world altogether?  Wherever he is, escaping is going to be a whole other story…

Director Lucy Cuthbertson says: “I’m very excited to invite audiences into our third, new summer family show A World Elsewhere, in co-production again with the genius team Splendid Productions. Enter the imagine-nation of an 11-year-old boy, Cass, meet the imaginary friends he has created to make sense of life and share what happens when the outside world threatens this creativity. We are as excited by the characters as the brilliant cast who will be playing them.

Inspired by Shakespeare, we aim to make the perfect, interactive, joyous introduction to theatre for younger audiences. And it’s very much for adults too. It’s genuinely a show for everyone.”

A World Elsewhere is designed by Rose Revitt, with Ben Hales also as Composer.

Bring all the family together for this funny, moving, and gloriously inventive celebration of storytelling, and revel in the worlds waiting to be told.

A co-production with Splendid Productions, A World Elsewhere is recommended for everyone from age 5 to 105.

Sam Wanamaker Playhouse 25th July – 30th August.
