A Little bit of Glastonbury comes to Nunhead
The Free University of Glastonbury – a much-loved spoken word and ideas space that usually takes place as part of Glastonbury Festival – is moving to Nunhead this year while Farmer Eavis gives his land a rest from the hordes of festival folk.
The Free University, organised by Simon Benham and Will Nicol, has been running at The Crows Nest in the Park Area of Glastonbury Festival for over a decade. It has grown a reputation for where clever, funny, and hungover people are talking interesting stuff, with the occasional musical interlude, but while Worthy Farm is fallow this year, Simon and Will are bringing their little Spoken Word corner of the festival from Somerset to SE15 to raise funds to end youth homelessness.
On Saturday 27 June from 2pm, The Ivy House will host the afternoon of talks, conversation, and performance featuring:
Miranda Sawyer – journalist, podcaster, author, and presenter. Discussing her ace Talk 90s To Me podcast and her brilliant book, Uncommon People, Britpop & Beyond in 20 Songs.
Janina Ramirez – leading Art Historian, Cultural Historian, and TV presenter whose hugely successful books Legenda and Femina have brilliantly reappraised history, shining a light on the female voices and perspectives that have been left out for centuries.

Jimi Famurewa – one of the country’s leading restaurant critics, Jimi is best known for his many appearances on Masterchef. His intimate and profound books Picky and Settlers tell stories about food, culture, and South East London with wit and joy.
Will Hodgkinson with Lawrence from Felt – The Times chief rock and pop critic spent a year with the luckless would-be superstar from Felt, Denim and Go-Cart Mozart. Their book has won accolades everywhere for a reason.
Lily Blacksell – runs the brilliant poetry/music event Canon Fodder at The Social, has been published all over and has just published her first full-length collection, Life Immediately, described in the Sunday Times as ‘full of fun’.
Liz Bentley – Psychotherapist by day / Comedian by night, Nunhead local Liz has just published her book – The Suicidal Therapist: Confessions of a Wounded Healer.
