Classic Film and Live Music Showcase of British Youth Culture
Onboard Theatreship, London’s cargo-ship-turned-arts-venue, the ‘Rip it Up; Rock the boat’ season takes classic, youth-based films and screens them alongside electrifying live performances by contemporary musicians.
Theatreship is both an independent cinema and an established music venue, so is uniquely positioned for a programme pairing iconic, soundtrack-driven films with live performances from emerging grassroots musicians. The venue has hosted some of the brightest contemporary musical voices, including King Krule, Slauson Malone, Okay Kaya, Broadside Hacks, and Stegonaute.
These nights have been co-curated by Phase, an emerging arts and culture magazine based between London and Paris.
Theatreship’s Head of Film Programming Natalie Hill said “We’re delighted to be collaborating with BFI and Phase magazine for this season. BFI’s film selections are an incredible showcase of British youth culture over the past 75 years. Phase magazine, a creative platform driven by young editors speaking directly to their contemporaries, are the perfect partner to respond to these films – exploring and celebrating youth culture today.”
Each film (chosen by Natalie Hill) has been paired with an emerging UK band (chosen by Phase Magazine) who perform for 30 minutes.
The bands playing are selected because they encapsulate a part of youth culture that is also represented in the film. It’s a relaxed setting and the venue is so unique being the only independent venture in Canary Wharf!
Sunday 23rd August
Film: Hard Days Night – A landmark film that rewrote the rules for music cinema, followed by live music from alt-rock band August.
Sunday 30th August
Film: Human Traffic the definitive British cult comedy-drama chronicles the chaotic, ecstasy-fueled weekend of five twenty-something friends, with live music from atmospheric electronic trio Domina.
Tuesday 1st September
Music: Wasabi – Film: This Is England, Shane Meadows’ gritty classic followed by a live performance from shoegaze alt-band Wasabi.
