Battersea Power Station is set to host open-air cinema, pop-up events and exhibitions at a jetty on the banks of the River Thames until 2028.
Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) has applied for temporary permission to use the Coaling Jetty for such events, including keeping its decking and bridges. The developer wants to test using the jetty for these events to help it put together a permanent strategy for the site, as part of the £9billion regeneration of the power station.
This permission would allow the jetty to continue to be used for art installations, live music, markets, open-air cinema, community or charity events, exhibitions and sports screenings.
Planning documents with the application said: “The uses proposed form part of an exercise in which to identify any appropriate and viable uses to underpin the permanent strategy for how the jetty could be used, maximising public benefit whilst remaining respectful of the surrounding context and heritage significance.”
The proposals are part of the wider masterplan for the power station, which is split into seven phases overall.
More than 2,200 homes have been completed so far in the redevelopment, including 386 affordable homes at New Mansion Square in partnership with Peabody.
The regeneration has also seen the opening of new shops, restaurants, bars and a Northern line extension connecting Battersea to the Underground for the first time.
There are still more than 16 acres of land left to be redeveloped in the remaining phases of the masterplan, which are being designed by BPSDC.
New cultural attractions and experiences, along with extra homes and workplaces, are expected to come forward in these future phases.
Wandsworth Council will make a decision on granting the temporary permission for the jetty in due course.
