Shooters Hill will face road closures for 18 months while Thames Water carries out repairs, following “unacceptable disruption” to residents.
From Monday, November 2 until June 2028, the wider area will be subject to disruption due to a large programme of repairs and improvement works to the local water mains by Thames Water.
The works will be staggered throughout this period to minimise the impact on residents, Greenwich Council said.
Since 2017 alone, the council pointed out there had been roughly 500 pipe bursts on Thames Water’s mains network in Shooters Hill, as well as 737 property hours of interrupted water supply for local people.
“Residents have endured unacceptable disruption from leaks and water issues, and the council has been pushing Thames Water to take meaningful action at the highest level to provide long-term solutions,” Cllr Calum O’Byrne Mulligan said.
The Cabinet Member Member for Transport, Climate Change, Waste and Streets added: “These crucial Thames Water repairs and replacements are something we’ve long campaigned for, so we’re pleased to see these works finally come to fruition.
“Unfortunately, the works can’t take place safely without road closures and bus diversions across the Shooters Hill area, and we really appreciate the continued patience of residents while Thames Water complete these works.
“We hope the short-term pain caused by the road closures and bus diversions will be worth the long-term gain of fewer leaks and emergency works, reliable water supply and easier journeys in and around the borough.”

In total, Thames Water plans to replace roughly 7.3km of water mains as part of the project. Similar works in boroughs such as Camden have resulted in a significant reduction in the number of leaks and bursts, Thames Water has told the council.
The work will be completed in phases, with residents on affected roads receiving letters with details about closures and works closer to the time.
The programme will also pause for two weeks over Christmas, when the affected roads will reopen.
A drop-in session for local residents to discuss the programme with Thames Water staff will be held from 4pm to 7pm on Wednesday, October 21 at Shrewsbury House Community Centre on Bushmoor Crescent, Shooters Hill.
