Transport, housing and ongoing concerns over incinerator key issues in Sutton

Transport, housing and ongoing concerns over the Beddington incinerator are among the key issues being raised by parties vying to run Sutton Council, as voters head to the polls on Thursday (May 7).

A total of 228 candidates will be contesting all 55 seats in the South London borough which has been run by a Liberal Democrat administration for over three decades, after they first gained a majority in 1990.

Barry Lewis is the current leader of the council, having taken over from the long-serving Ruth Dombey in May 2024. The borough is also represented by two Lib Dem MPs, who took both the Sutton & Cheam and Wallington & Carshalton constituencies from the Conservatives in 2024.

The council is currently comprised of 28 Liberal Democrats, 20 Conservatives, three Beddington Independent Residents, two independents and two Labour councillors. However, this election will see an increased presence from Reform UK, who will be standing candidates in all of the borough’s 20 wards, which each have between two and three councillors.

Professor Tony Travers of the London School of Economics said Nigel Farage’s party could disrupt the long-standing Liberal Democrat–Conservative balance in Sutton. He told the BBC: “There are parts of the borough which voted Leave in the 2016 referendum, which could well be won by Reform, but probably not to the extent that the Liberal Democrats lose power.”

“So – Lib Dems to lose seats but probably just about to retain control,” he added.

Parties have now released their local manifestos, covering areas as varied as policing and crime, housing and green spaces. Here’s a summary of what all the major parties are promising, should they take power this Thursday:
