AFC Wimbledon matched their semi-final first-leg result with a 1-0 victory over Notts County at Plough Lane to reach the League Two play-off final.

Josh Neufville scored the match’s only goal in the eighth minute.

The Dons secured their first trip to Wembley since 2016 and will face Walsall for a chance at promotion to League One next Monday.

Already in a deficit and without their two top-scorers Alessandra Jatta and David McGoldrick, the visiting Magpies started urgently but Mai Traore’s acrobatic attempt five minutes in did not come close.

Neufville netted three minutes later as he fired an angled shot past former Dons goalkeeper Alex Bass.

Traore had two more attempts in the first half but couldn’t get past Wimbledon stopper Owen Goodman.

In the 40th minute, Marcus Browne failed to finish after Neufville fired a cross into the box.

The visitors started the second half on the attack and Jodi Jones had a chance from a free-kick that went wide.

Matty Stevens looked to have a clear shot at goal 54 minutes in, but a shirt pull on Matty Platt derailed the Dons’ hopes for a second.

On the hour, Browne’s effort with Bass off his line drifted wide.

Stevens had another prime opportunity to score eight minutes later, only for Bass to deny him a first goal since March.

Bass then saved James Tilley’s shot from outside the box.

The visitors kept trying to produce a response as George Abbott’s long shot in the 76th minute went high and wide.

Platt had two attempts with ten minutes to go but both went over the crossbar.

Dons substitute Aron Sasu forced Bass into another save two minutes from time as the hosts closed in on Wembley.

In the other semi-final, the Saddlers defeated Chesterfield 4-1 on aggregate to secure their place in next Monday’s final. Kick-off is 3pm.
