AFC Wimbledon director of football Craig Cope says the Dons are targeting “four or five” more signings as they aim to improve on last season’s nineteenth-place finish in League One.
Wimbledon have added defenders Dan Sweeney and Steven Sessegnon and midfielder Zack Nelson to boss Johnnie Jackson’s squad so far this summer.
All three players featured in a 3-2 friendly win against Coventry City in Marbella at the weekend.
“We’re looking for four or five extra players now. We’ve got loads of time to do that, we really happy with where the squad is,” Cope said on the Dons’ website.
“We’ve got a good core, a good base, hopefully, we don’t lose anyone. We’re really trying to get the right players in those next four or five positions we bring in.
“We’ve got all the loan slots available to us. Something we didn’t really exploit too much last year was the loan market. I think, if we’re going to achieve what we want to achieve this year, we need to get more good loans in.
“We obviously had a few, but we want to get more good loans in this year. We’re obviously monitoring that market as well.
“As of now, we’re really happy with the squad we’ve got. We need to have a few bits around that spine.”
Last season was Wimbledon’s first back in the third tier for three years.
Cope added: “We’re really happy with last season. Obviously it could have been a lot better than what we all expected, but it was a real achievement to finish where we did and finish the whole season only being seventeen minutes inside the relegation zone and not in the relegation zone once after 90 minutes.
“As happy as we are with this season, we obviously want to go one better this year and finish a little bit higher. It gives us a chance to reset, set some targets and the new players can get on board that early.
“We’ve got a lot of the squad from last season that we’re really happy with and want to keep moving forward. The core of the squad is still there. We’ve got a real Wimbledon squad and we’re looking forward to it.”
Meanwhile, the Dons have former Millwall head of performance Dave Carolan and ex-Southend United boss Keven Maher with them in southern Spain.
“For this week, we’ve brought out the highly experienced Dave Carolan to help Josh Jardine out. Josh has been with us just over a year now and has really high potential.
“We thought bringing someone of Dave’s experience can come and help out. This week is crucial for the performance department – it sets up our season.
“Having Dave Carolan, who’s highly experienced and is such a quality performance coach, helping Josh out this week has been really good.
“Terry [Skiverton] had to go and have some treatment on his ankle, so we’re a coach down at the moment.
“We’re checking with Terry every day. We can’t wait for him to come back. I think he’s been a key member of staff for us over the past four years.
“It’s important for Terry to rest up. We’re very conscious that he needs to take the time and come back fit and fighting. In the meantime, we’ve brought in Kevin Maher.
“He’s had a really successful stint at Southend United. It’s a bit of a surprise to see him out of work at the minute, winning the FA Trophy at Wembley for them.
“He comes in with a lot of experience to help us out. He offers a different perspective to myself and Johnnie. He’s put on some really good sessions and we’re really grateful to him for helping us out this week.”
