LEWISHAM’S Alex Yee sprinted over the finish line to win gold in Wednesday’s Olympic triathlon after a dramatic run on the banks of the River Seine.

Italy’s Alessio Crociani led after completing the swimming leg in 20 minutes ten seconds.

Yee, 26, who was positioned outside the top fifteen going into the 40km cycling leg, emerged in second ahead of the 10km run.

New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde led by fourteen seconds going into the final 2.5km lap but Yee closed in and made the decisive move with half a kilometre to go.

Yee crossed the line in one hour 43 minutes 33 seconds, six seconds clear of Wilde.

Yee went one better than Tokyo 2020 when he finished second.

Yee’s success means that Team GB have retained their dominance in the event, having won three men’s golds in the last four games.
