BROMLEY manager Andy Woodman lauded his team’s performance in an upset 1-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon in League Two action on Saturday afternoon.
Corey Whitely scored the only goal, sneaking his effort past Wimbledon keeper Owen Goodman with fourteen minutes left.
Bromley became the first team to beat Wimbledon at Plough Lane in nine games, ending their South London rivals’ longest-ever streak of twelve unbeaten league matches.
“I thought it was excellent, a real disappointment that we didn’t have a couple more, to be honest – I thought we were good for at least one if not two more goals,” Woodman said.
“You’re always going to know when you come to Wimbledon that the kitchen sink is going to be thrown at you, and we stood up and defended in numbers and got ourselves across the line, so I’m delighted with the 1-0 win away from home here at one of the promotion favourites.”
Heading into the final stretch of the season, Woodman praised his team’s fitness and diligence.
He said: “We’re a hard-working team, you can see that – I say we’re the fittest team in the league by a country mark and that’s a credit to my staff.
“The longer the game goes on, the more I’m happy, we just look fit and strong, and that’s not a bad trait to have.”
Whitely also received praise from his manager, who cited his unselfish work-rate for his team.
“The mileage he puts in for this team is phenomenal,” Woodman said. “He’s not been in the team as of late – that’s conscious by us because he can’t keep playing at that level all the time, it’s impossible.
“We might have just rested him and brought him back at the right time there for the final twelve [games].”
The win kept Bromley in tenth place in the League Two standings, with 48 points from 34 games.
In their first-ever season in the EFL, promotion to League One is not out of reach, as the team currently sit seven points outside the play-off spots.
However, Woodman stressed the importance of focusing on one game at a time.
He said: “We’re not getting carried away, but we’re in a good position – we’re churning out a few results, making one or two people look up and hopefully we can keep doing that right to the end.”
Bromley return to action on Tuesday night as they host Doncaster Rovers at 7.45pm.
