AFC Wimbledon supporter’s crowd-funding passes £100,00 mark – as he praises Newcastle United and fans for their response

A crowd-funding page set up by an AFC Wimbledon fan for repairs to Plough Lane has passed its £100,000 target.

Dons fan Graham Stacey set up the JustGiving page and said the response had been “unprecedented” as he also praised Newcastle United supporters.

The Dons were due to play the Magpies in the third round of the EFL Cup at home on Tuesday, but flooding caused major damage to the pitch and around the stadium.

Stacey’s initial target was £10,000. It is currently at over £112,000.

“It’s absolutely amazing and unprecedented I think,” Stacey, 50, told BBC Sport.

“We’ve had small donations of pocket money pledged and we’ve also had donations of £5,000 from individuals.”

Newcastle pledged £15,000.

“I had to refresh the page a few times and check it was actually from the club,” Stacey said.

“I cannot praise Newcastle and their fans highly enough. Their fans were the ones who started donating and putting things on social media to see what they could do [to help].

“People have a pop at the Premier League but this shows there’s a heart there, at the end of the day.”

Stacey added: “It’s more than a football ground to us, it’s something we built.

“Getting into that stadium has been a bit of a journey.

“Our fans always rally around, they tackle adversity head on.”

Wimbledon’s next two home games against Accrington Stanley and Crewe Alexandra have been postponed. They are aiming to be able to host Carlisle United in League Two on October 12.

“I know from my time on the board that if we are to share a ground it’s not cheap, as we played a few games at QPR,” Stacey said.

“I know the money is going to be well spent and as a club we’ll need it.”

On the JustGiving page, Stacey wrote: “I’m raising money to help AFC Wimbledon get games on following damage to the stadium and pitch due to the extensive flooding over the course of 22-23rd September, which left the club having to call off games and destroyed the pitch.

“The money raised will go towards helping the club deal with any costs associated with the floods and could range from repairs to pump hire to rental of an alternative venue – that will be decided by the Club.

“We have been in touch with the Club and been assured that any help would be appreciated.

“As you may know, AFC Wimbledon is a fan-owned club and the ability to play games in front of crowds is crucial to its existence.

“A cup game against Premier League Newcastle on September 24 was postponed and it looks as though games could be cancelled for an extended period.

“AFC Wimbledon is more than a lower league football club – it is admired for its work in the local community through the AFC Wimbledon Foundation charity, while Dons Local Action Group have distributed food for more than six million meals to those in need since 2020.

“On the field, the club joined the Football League in 1977 and rose through the divisions, becoming founder members of the Premier League and going on to win the FA Cup in 1988.

“The club reformed in 2002, starting again at the lowest rung of non-league football before rejoining the Football League just nine years later.

“The club now competes in English football’s League Two.
